Why?
When trying to figure out what services I should deploy to my home lab, I would frequently end up scrolling GitHub (or similar platforms) and thinking "that looks cool, I'll self-host that" etc.
That became unsustainable fast - Frequently, I would find myself struggling to remember if I had looked at a particular repository or product before, leading to a lot of wasted time re-reviewing repositories that I had already looked at. I would also find myself spinning off on research into a specific app or repository, rather than focusing on what I was actually looking for.
The main ideas behind Service Evaluations are to:
- Provide myself with a knowledge database regarding services I've reviewed before
- Enable me to provide a clear and coherent decision to future me as to why I previously dismissed a service (and potentially result in a re-review if things have changed significantly)
- Give me a defined set of questions to work through to help me make an informed decision
